Oh the smell of donkey poo to the aroma of spices. Marrakesh is a city of wonders. Marrakesh, is all painted one color. Its absolutely gorgeous and by far one of my favorite travel destinations. The people of Marrakesh are extremely nice and very caring. Morocco lives heavily off of tourism, so taking care of their tourists is a HUGE responsibility. Marrakesh isn’t just a city—it’s a full-blown experience. From the moment you land, the energy is different. The colors, the scents, the chaos—it all blends into something electric. Whether you’re wandering through the souks, sipping mint tea on a rooftop, or getting lost in the medina, Marrakesh is a place that sticks with you.

Marrakesh Tips
- Currency – Morocco uses dirhams, and one US dollar will get you about 11 of them. When it comes to spending money, carry cash and expect to haggle in the markets.
- How many Days – Ideally, 3-4 days would be perfect. This allows you to experience Marrakesh and soak in the culture as well, relax in your riad and have some time to explore out of Marrakesh for day trips.
- Clothing – Morocco is a Muslim country, so you’ll quickly notice some cultural differences. I’d recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your shoulders and knees (think maxi skirts and summer scarves).
- Climate -Marrakech is warm all year. Average temps are around 55 degrees Fahrenheit in the coldest months and 85 in the summer. It can get super hot (100+) on summer afternoons so plan for some steamy days.
- Getting Around Marrakesh – It’s pretty easy to get around the city of Marrakech on foot and by taxi. We mostly walked, but I recommend having a map or using a phone to use Google Maps.
Here is a quick Marrakesh itinerary:
- Stroll through the Medina and Souks (Markets)
- Bahia Palace
- Jardin Majorelle by YSL
- Ben Youssef Madrasa
- Camel Ride Excursion
- Massages or Experience a Traditional Hamman
There are plenty of Rooftop Terraces in Marrakesh, are my top picks:
- Terrasses Des Epices
- Cafe Arabe
- Nomad
- Dardar
- El Fenn Rooftop Bar- I would have suggested it as one of my top picks; however, I had a horrible experience there and I do not recommend it.
Where to Eat
Marrakesh has no shortage of restaurants. Moroccan cuisine is flavorful, prepared in a distinctive manner, and contains delectable spices and flavors. For a genuine bite to eat, Marrakech’s marketplaces are the ideal location. At night, Jemaa el Fna, the main square, comes alive with a lively hum and mouthwatering scents. You can smell all the aromas before they hit your palette. The most popular dishes in Morocco are their Tagines. Chicken…Lamb and Fish Tagines.
You may be wondering what the heck is a Tagine? Tagine is also the name of the clay vessel where the dish is cooked. The cooking vessel is a shallow glazed clay dish with a removable cone shaped lid with a short vertical cylinder at the top that allows the stew to vent.
Moroccan Chicken Tagine is a classic North African dish similar to a stew with spices, garlic, onion, olives, and preserved lemon. Lamb Tagine recipe gets its Moroccan flavor from a blend of aromatic spices such as turmeric, cumin, ginger, cardamom and cinnamon. Moroccan fish tagine is a classic dish with potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers. Each day for dinner, I was trying their tagines.
I highly recommend trying couscous, tagines, skewers, and traditional salads when you’re dining out. Here are my top picks to try in Marrakesh!
- Les Jardins du Lotus
- Dardar Rooftop
- Nomad
- Les Salama
- Folk Restaurant
- La Trattoria
- Comptoir Darna
- L’mida Marrakesh
- Kabana Marrakesh
- Atay Cafe
- La Sultana Restaurant

Where to Stay in Marrakesh
Marrakesh is a city of contrasts, where traditional Moroccan charm meets luxury, offering a wide range of accommodation options that suit various preferences and budgets. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious hotel, a boutique riad, or a more budget-friendly stay, Marrakesh has something for everyone.
The best way to experience Marrakesh is to stay in a Riad. Riads are traditional houses or palaces with an interior garden or courtyard. The riads are focused for family privacy and protection from the weather in Morocco. Most of the Riads have Zelij, a Moroccan tile that is absolutely gorgeous. Many of the courtyards in the Riads have a pool where you can wine down and enjoy a cup of mint tea.
Here is my top recommendation for where to stay in the city:
Riad BE Marrakesh – A Tranquil Oasis in the Heart of Marrakesh
If you’re looking for a serene and intimate stay in the heart of Marrakesh, Riad BE is an exceptional choice. This boutique riad offers a peaceful escape while still being just a short walk from the lively Jemaa el-Fnaa and the bustling streets of the Medina. With its refined design, personalized service, and cozy atmosphere, Riad BE offers an authentic Moroccan experience with a modern twist.
Riad BE seamlessly blends traditional Moroccan architectural elements with contemporary design. As you enter through the wooden doors of the riad, you’ll be greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance. The central courtyard, typical of Moroccan riads, features a lush garden, a tranquil fountain, and comfortable seating areas. This serene space is perfect for enjoying a quiet moment or sipping on Moroccan mint tea.
The riad’s rooms and common areas reflect a refined taste, with minimalistic decor that emphasizes Moroccan craftsmanship. Intricate mosaic tiles, soft earth-toned walls, and traditional ironwork give the riad an elegant yet approachable feel.
One of the highlights of Riad BE is its rooftop terrace, which offers stunning views of Marrakesh’s skyline and the surrounding Medina. The terrace is the perfect spot for enjoying a meal, relaxing with a book, or simply taking in the sights and sounds of the city.
- What to Enjoy:
- Panoramic views of Marrakesh, including the Atlas Mountains and the famous Koutoubia Mosque
- Comfortable lounge chairs for relaxing in the sun
- A small plunge pool for cooling off during warm days
- Shaded areas to relax and unwind after a day of sightseeing
It’s a fantastic place to escape the heat of the city and enjoy the peace and quiet that the riad offers.
One of the standout features of Riad BE is the warm and attentive staff who go above and beyond to make guests feel at home. The team at Riad BE embodies traditional Moroccan hospitality, ensuring that every guest has a comfortable, relaxed, and memorable stay. Their personalized approach and attention to detail are part of what makes the riad such a special place to stay in Marrakesh. From the owners of the Riad, to Mohammed, Abdul and Abhraheem- all made this experience in Marrakesh so memorable. From their kindness to assisting with breakfast every morning to helping arrange transportation; all deserved to be truly recognized. Thank you RIAD BE Marrakesh, you were the highlight of our stay!

I highly suggest purchasing your tickets in advance as ques become very long. You can purchase tickets to Jardins Majorelle along with other tours and excursions Here
Bahia Palace or Palais Bahia
The Bahia Palace is a stunning representation of the grandeur of Moroccan architecture and a must-see for anyone visiting Marrakesh. Built in the late 19th century by the grand vizier Si Moussa, it’s a true masterpiece of Islamic architecture. The palace is known for its exquisite design, ornate rooms, and lush gardens.
As you step into the palace, you’re greeted with intricate mosaics, carved wooden ceilings, and peaceful courtyards that seem to transport you back in time. The palace’s name, Bahia, meaning “brilliance” in Arabic, perfectly encapsulates its beauty. The central courtyard is the highlight, with its tranquil fountains surrounded by fragrant orange trees and flowers in full bloom, offering a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
The palace’s private harem quarters, once reserved for the vizier’s family, are especially captivating. The stunning detail in the tilework and the spacious, airy rooms evoke a sense of Moroccan luxury. Don’t forget to wander through the gardens – they are a beautiful mix of geometric patterns, palm trees, and small fountains that embody the classic Moroccan garden style.
Ben Youssef Madrasa: A Sanctuary of Learning and Beauty
The Ben Youssef Madrasa is one of the most striking examples of Moroccan Islamic architecture, and it was once the largest Islamic school in North Africa. Established in the 14th century, it’s named after the Almoravid Sultan, Ali ibn Yusuf, who founded it to educate young men in subjects ranging from theology to medicine.
As you enter the madrasa, the first thing you’ll notice is the magnificent courtyard, a perfect example of classical Moroccan design with its symmetrical layout and calming water features. The zelij (mosaic tiles) that adorn the walls, floors, and fountains are simply mesmerizing, their patterns reflecting the deep symbolic meanings in Islamic art. The intricately carved woodwork on the ceilings and the stained glass windows filter the sunlight beautifully, creating an ethereal glow throughout the rooms.
Inside, visitors can explore the dormitory rooms that once housed students from all over the Muslim world. Despite the simple furnishings, there’s a sense of reverence and history in each room. The madrasa’s architectural detail – from the horseshoe arches to the arabesque designs – showcases the deep cultural and spiritual importance of education during the time.
La Mamounia: A Timeless Luxury Escape in Marrakesh
La Mamounia first opened its doors in 1923, initially designed to serve as a royal residence for the King of Morocco. Over the years, it has played host to countless famous guests, from artists and musicians to politicians and royalty. The hotel’s blend of traditional Moroccan architecture with modern luxury makes it one of the most iconic landmarks in Marrakesh. The legendary hotel has been lovingly restored and renovated, preserving its historic charm while ensuring that the modern comforts and amenities are nothing short of extraordinary.
As you step through the massive doors of La Mamounia, you’re immediately transported to a world where timeless tradition and cutting-edge luxury meet. The architecture features intricate Moroccan tilework, lush gardens, and stunning courtyards — all infused with an air of regal splendor. The grand marble entrance and the ornate arches set the tone for what’s to come.
The central courtyard is an oasis, lined with olive trees and scented flowers, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling city outside. The mosaic tiles, carved wooden doors, and intricate ceiling designs are awe-inspiring, allowing guests to feel immersed in the rich cultural heritage of Morocco while enjoying the best in modern amenities.
The Spa at La Mamounia: A World of Relaxation
One of the standout features of La Mamounia is its world-class spa. The Les Bains de Marrakech spa offers an unforgettable experience, where you can indulge in traditional Moroccan hammams (steam baths), soothing massages, and luxurious beauty treatments. The spa uses the finest natural ingredients such as argan oil, rosewater, and essential oils, all sourced from Morocco’s rich landscape.
The spa’s tranquil ambiance is complemented by its beautiful Moroccan design, including tiled walls, intricate mosaics, and soothing lighting, which create a calming oasis for total relaxation. I highly recommend their spa, 10/10.
Other Spa recommendations in Marrakesh:
- La Sultana Spa
- Royal Mansour Spa
- Les Bains de Orient Spa

Each of these sites is a reflection of the artistic, architectural, and cultural richness of Marrakesh. The Bahia Palace immerses you in the opulence of Morocco’s royal past, the Ben Youssef Madrasa takes you back to the days when the pursuit of knowledge was revered, and the Majorelle Garden offers a vibrant and calming retreat for nature lovers and art enthusiasts alike.
And you know you can’t leave Morocco, without experiencing a Camel Ride. I’ve always wanted to ride a camel but of course, being here in the United States, who offers Camel Rides? During sunset, we booked an excursion to ride a camel. It was so amazing! This was my first experience riding a camel and it was quite fun. Was I scared? A little. The only scary part was when the camel gets up on it’s feet. If you go to Morocco, this is a must!
Marrakesh is a city that captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression. From the vibrant souks and historic palaces to the tranquil riads and lush gardens, every corner of the city tells a story steeped in tradition and charm. Whether you’re savoring the flavors of Moroccan cuisine at a rooftop restaurant, exploring the architectural beauty of Bahia Palace, or unwinding in the peaceful courtyards of Riad BE, Marrakesh offers a unique blend of history, culture, and modern luxury.
The city’s rich tapestry of colors, sounds, and scents creates an unforgettable experience that lingers long after you’ve left. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, Marrakesh delivers it all with warmth and authenticity. A visit to this magical city isn’t just a trip — it’s an experience that stays with you, calling you back to explore more of its timeless beauty.
